Since 1961, the World Eskimo Indian Olympics has been an annual opportunity for the world to witness the strength and endurance of Alaskan Eskimo athletes from the six major tribes: Aleut, Athabascan, Haida, Inupiaq, Tlingit, Tsimpsian andYup'ik.

While Spandex shorts and athletic shoes are worn by competitors,  mukluks, furs and other beautiful regalia are proudly displayed throughout the event.

Make no mistake...these fierce athletes compete with every last ounce of energy they can muster.

But their sportsmanship is genuine and it's common to see them in a smiling embrace.

Their elders have taught them to support one another, through thick and thin.

The sense of family is felt throughout the entire four-day competition.

Stories of circumpolar survival are depicted through the native dances in which the young and old participate with astounding agility.

Tables full of gorgeous, hand-crafted items are available for purchase.

An an enjoyable, energy-filled event not to be missed!
